    New Moon Trailer Analysis

What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
The techniques that this trailer uses, consists of a variety of techniques which persuades the audience to see the film. Firstly it uses quick cut shots and transitions to create a fast paced view of the adventure/action genre, engaging their target audiences to watch the film. Moreover, It also uses fade to black transitions which helps to engage the audience whilst the sequence disappears, therefore creating suspense with the use of one of the characters voiceover being heard in the back ground narration. Furthermore, the use of music also helps to create a fast-paced atmosphere and helps to gain tension and increase the tempo in trailer which has the effect of engaging the audience. Another technique which is used in regards of persuading the audience is towards the ending of the trailer, a use of a small teaser clip, gives the audience an insight into what they will be excepting from the movie as it is a sequel to the other Twilight movies so their loyal audience expects what to see from this movie. The use of silence in the end of the trailer connotes to the audience that this film is going to be very tense and is likely to lead into a bad ending as the audience are shown how their favourite character could end up dying in this movie as well as somewhat better than the first one.

How is gender represented in this trailer?

In this trailer the character, the protagonist Edward is seen to be the love of Bella’s life, who then leaves her, which creates disaster in Bella’s world. She is represented as being the typical heartbroken women who sufferers and is tormented by images of her love of her life. The males in this trailer are seen to be the ones affecting the dilemmas or solutions in this film. The fact that there are two completely different contrasts of persona of the two main male protagonists makes the trailer seem more interesting. Mostly as Jacob is seen to be the caring and loving friend and Edward is seen to be the intensely in love/heartbreaking love of Bella’s life but partially not due to his thoughts.

However the character Jacob is seen to be protective to Bella, as now that Edward has gone he attempts to seduce in a loving role towards Bella, which in result makes her stronger. The females in this trailer I seen to be the weak ones, who need a presence of a male to feel secure ,i.e. Bella and Jacobs new found relationship helps her to come out of her depression/screaming episodes.

What target audience would be attracted to this film?
The target audiences which are most likely to be attracted to this film, would be C2DE female demographic. The female target audience are attracted to the two main male protagonists who are Edward and Jacob as merchandise are mainly sold with these characters appearance on them. Women are also likely to relate to the romantic side of the film, as they could refer back to their own lives and think of their own partners and teenage girls can do this as well. The adventure side, with the involvement of werewolves etc, can appeal to males as they would like to see fight/action scenes as men are into action.

    Twentieth Century Fox

Toy Story is a 1995 American computer-animated film, the first Disney/Pixar film to be made. The top-grossing film on its opening weekend Toy Story went on to earn over $191 million in the United States and Canada during its initial theatrical release and took in more than $361 million worldwide. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive, praising both the technical innovation of the animation and the wit and sophistication of the screenplay although the film was a huge box office success, the film is currently Pixar's lowest grossing film while the film's second sequel Toy Story 3 is their highest grossing film earning over $1 billion worldwide.
    Merchandise:
Disney's Animated Storybook: Toy Story 1 2 and 3 and Disney's Activity Center: Toy Story were released. Disney’s Animated Storybook: Toy Story was the best selling software title of 1996, selling over 500,000 copies. Two console video games were released for the film: the Toy Story video game, for the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, and PC as well as Toy Story Racer, for the PlayStation (which contains elements from Toy Story 2).Pixar created original animations for all of the games, including fully animated sequences for the PC titles.
Toy Story had a large promotion prior to its release, leading to numerous tie-ins with the film including images on food packaging. A variety of merchandise was released during the film's theatrical run and its initial VHS release including toys, clothing, and shoes, among other things. When an action figure for Buzz Light-year and Sheriff Woody was created it was initially ignored by retailers. However, after over 250,000 figures were sold for each character prior to the film's release, demand continued to expand, eventually reaching over 25 million units sold by 2007.
Toy Story and its sequels have also inspired multiple attractions at the theme parks of Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

    Film Distribution

Film distribution is the process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience. Film distribution usually goes through many steps for the movie to be available to the specific audience.
Here is usually the path in the process a film company may need to go through for their movie to be available in cinemas:
    ·         Someone has an idea for a movie.
    ·         They pitch the idea to producers/directors and write the movie out.
    ·         A studio/investor purchase rights to the movie.
    ·         Find actors/mise-en-scene.
    ·         Find suitable locations and check if available for when needed.
    ·         Rehearse scenes.
    ·         Film the movie.
    ·         Edit the movie and produce final cut.
    ·         The film is sent to the studio which makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
    ·         The distribution company determines how many copies of the movie to make, buyers negotiate with distribution terms and few days before the movie release the movie is sent to the theaters.
    ·         Merchandise is sold to promote the movie.
    ·         Public release/Theaters show the movie for specified number of weeks.
    ·         The potential target audience buys a ticket to watch the movie.
    ·         After the number of weeks the movie has run the copy is sent back to the distribution and money is paid to the distribution company.

    Hollywood’s Studio System
The studio system was a means of film production and distribution dominant in Hollywood from the early 1920s through the 1950s. The term studio system refers to the practice of large motion picture studios producing movies primarily on their own filmmaking lots with creative personnel under often long-term contract and pursuing vertical integration through ownership or effective control of distributors and movie theatres, guaranteeing additional sales of films through manipulative booking techniques.

    Horizontal Integration
Horizontal Integration involves the acquisition of competitors in the same section of the industry. An example of Horizontal Integration is Sony Ericcson. Sony Ericsson is a joint venture which joined together in 2001.
    Vertical Integration
Vertical Integration is when companies control the three main areas of production, distribution and exhibition and involves one company having the ownership of every stage of the production process, thereby ensuring complete control of a media product. An example of Vertical Integration when Granada buying into Liverpool Football Club.

London to Brighton Trailer – Ms Wigley

    1.    Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to establish the film's genre?
Regarding the trailer, there is a use off various media language which establishes the hybrid, thriller/British drama that the movie acquires.Firstly, there is a use of review quotes which appears on the transitions between video image scenes of the movie and appear consistently regarding from different media print companies, which therefore indicates to the audience of the genre. Moreover, there is a use of high-tempered, fast pace music soundtrack in the background which also connotes the genre that this film is and influences the audience that this would be consistent in the film as the trailer emphasises this.
Furthermore, various camera angles also help identification to occur from the audience determining the thriller/drama genre. For example, there is a frequent use of close up shots to mainly the protagonists facial expressions allow it to convey a message to the audience to gain an understanding of what and how is this affecting her. In regards with this point, close up camera angles are typical in drama films as the audience are ‘forcefully’ drawn onto the protagonists facial expressions as well as other characters. An example of this from the trailer is while the protagonist is in the car and is being lead away by a mature male helps to connect with the audience to helps identify her fear and confusion. In addition, the transition of each sequence in the editing is cut which is purposeful in order to establish its thriller/drama genre.
Low-key lighting is also used throughout the scenes which connotes and emphasises the darkness or perhaps the bad events which will occur during this movie hence presenting the genre in a non direct way to the audience. There is also a use of enigma codes which is presented with the gun shot that appears during the sequence, connoting its thriller genre and creates a enigma code of what you may expect in the film as it is seen to be shocking  and unexpected which is one of the conventions of the thriller genre.
    2.    Media Representations: How is gender represented in the trailer?
Male characters in this trailer are shown to have dominant ideology as we as the audience are viewing the males ordering the women and making the decisions as well as acquiring stacks of money which gives them power, freedom and control. The use of props, such as the gun and high amounts of money also influences the audience in the way that the male genders are presented in oppose to how women are presented as by the use of props, we can see the representation of power to the males.
However, the female characters are represented as fragile and vulnerable people as they are shown in the trailer to be controlled by the men and being forced into certain activities that they do not wish to pursue. That being said, the protagonist who plays an 11 year old girl has an alternative representation. From the trailer this can be identified as her character has a role of prostitution, which is rather shocking as generally we never intervene child actors with roles that are too extreme.
An example of dominant and alternative ideology is in the toilet scene, where we see the women to be inferior as the low camera angles suggests the male are dominating over the female characters.
    3.       Media Institutions: In what ways is the film 'London to Brighton'  typical of a low budget British film?
Firstly, the characters including the protagonist are wearing clothing and make-up which allows the audience to view the actors in an unprofessional way. Therefore this allows the audience to view the actors as us as we would seem to have same values as them.Furthermore, the actors name are not introduced or presented in the trailer as the audience would most likely not be able to identify with the actors that are in this film, particularly because it is not a Hollywood film so that was intentionally not included as we are again, not expected to identify with the actors.
Furthermore, the quality of the video is more so unprofessional which goes in regards with the location or setting of the scenes which are mostly set in public locations such as train stations, public toilets etc...The reason for this is because I believe that the institution did not want to spend any money on preparing a studio but would go to a place with no background actors apart from the public to create a more typical low budget movie.
The accents, currency and reviews also indicate that it is a typical low budget British film. For example, where a male character reveals a £20 note, when the protagonist speaks and also the institutions that review the film such as the times etc.
    4.    Media Audiences: In what ways does the trailer promote the film to its target audience?
The trailer in many ways promotes the film to its target audiences. One way the film trailer does this is by the reviews that the film has been given. "The best British film of the century" - Big Issue.. Also as the film is a British film it attracts it's audience. The film is targeted for an adult audience between 16-34, and classes D and E.
