Magazine Hwk Due Tue 15 March

’There are so many things to expect from this movie, from scarring shocking moments to emotionally mind blowing scenes’’ – Daljeeta Juttla who plays Anne is this intense horror.

Primetime productions, one of the greatest British production companies have released a new horror film called The Outsider which will be released later this year. Can this film be potentially the greatest British horror of the decade? Well we spoke to the actress, Daljeeta Juttla who stars in this truly horrific and brutally terrifying movie.
Question: This is a great opportunity for you, how did you feel when you got to play the part for one of the greatest production company in the U.K.?
D: I am really grateful for this opportunity particularly because I usually play a normal person in the previous movies that I have starred in and to be starring in a horror movie by Primetime productions would add a big twist to my acting and would be a great experience for everyone to see me play a totally different person.
Question: So what do we expect to see from this movie, anything different from a typical horror genre?
D: There are so many things to expect from this movie, from scarring shocking moments to emotionally mind blowing scenes. What the director added to the typical conventions of horror is that a teenage girl would play the murderer. So ultimately, she is getting revenge on the people who bullied her during her time and continue to harass her until she just unveils a possessed side of her, unleashing all her fury which really makes this film really shocking and I find that it is good for a change that a woman is the killer rather than the usual.
Question: You play a possessed teenage girl, is this similar to Jennifer’s Body?
D: In Jennifer’s Body, the horror theme in the movie is more comic towards the audience as Megan Fox is playing the demon and the storyline is very different to The Outsider. However, the notion of turning from a normal person to a demon is similar but, in one of the main conventions of British films is to have British actors which mainly the British audience will be able to identify with for example the British locations.

Redraft Miss Wigley DUE MONDAY

REDRAFT

I believe that audiences are more powerful than the institution, this can be proved to a certain extent by considering what input the audience has alongside the institution. My three primary texts, which are reality TV shows are The X Factor, Britain’s got Talent and I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here. All three texts are similar in a sense that they are all from the same genre and also they all broadcasted on the same channel. Also, they all run on three different platforms, which are print, e-media, and broadcast. Consequently, I believe fulfilling these three platforms is a necessity for a successful show as it will be able to engage the audience in several different ways.

The X Factor is the U.Ks most watched reality TV show which is aired on ITV1 and involves audience interaction such as the red button where votes can be casted and is totally dependable upon the audience to decide which consequently promotes the audience theory. It can also be noted that institutions may want the audience to believe that they have all the power and control of the show in order to gain maximum interaction between the audience and the institution thus creating a more popular show. This shows that audiences are becoming increasingly powerful in shaping the show. The hit TV show attracts on an average of 17.5 million viewers each series.

Furthermore, The X Factor website also allows the audience to interact with the show. One way it promotes interaction is by doing weekly voting polls and forums on the website which the audience can vote and have their say and see what other viewers think too. For example, the current question on the x factor website is “Do you think Matt Cardle was a worthy winner?” furthermore, they also display their broadcasted show online so if anyone misses the show or would want to watch it again, they will be up to date with the show. This may be due to the fact that the institution does not ultimately want to disinterest the audience by engaging them as much as possible throughout all three platforms.

This therefore, shows us that the audiences are becoming increasingly powerful on what media institutions plan and put in the show. Also the website allows viewers to share their views and opinions through the X Factor blog and forum and also read the gossip on what goes on behind the scenes through The Sun which runs on the print platform.

Also because X Factor is a popular TV show viewers can catch up via the ITVPlayer. Furthermore, a social networking site such as Facebook and Twitter allow audiences to shape and place their views across, and is a place where audiences interact with one and other and share opinions through joining groups and supporting campaigns. Audience feedback and opinions have been successful, this is shown as the X Factor and Apple have joint together in a bid to react to the change in technology by releasing x factor apps.

My secondary text that I have chosen to for my case study is I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here which is also shown on ITV 1 and involves audience interaction as it is also similar to the x factor as it is a reality TV show which attracts a wide variety of viewers. I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here has a website for viewers to interact with the show which further engages viewers. The website has a range of activities and also includes live footage and highlights from the Jungle, and also has a blog on the website which allows the audience to share their opinions and views about the show. The audience is therefore hugely powerful in shaping the show as mainstreams audiences watch the show which is successful in using gratifications which keeps the audience entertained.

My third and final text that I have chosen for my case study is Britain’s Got Talent which is very similar to both of my other texts as they are all reality TV shows and are all aired on ITV1 and involves audience interaction as they all attract mainstream audiences. Britain’s got talent attracts an audience of 6 million.  The show is very similar to the x factor and is in fact identical in the way they approach their audiences as the structure of both shows is the same. Furthermore, The BGT website includes competitions and news about the judges and also a feedback forum which allows the audience shape the output of the media.

Presentation Evaluation
WWW: - Spoke clearly and made eye contact with every person in the room.
              - Only referred to the PowerPoint after each topic spoken.
              - I knew which part was spoken before hand in order to create a smooth flow of the pitch.

EBI: - Should of stood in the middle rather than on the side.
-I spoke about more things to show my full understanding.
-Answered the questions asked by the assistants.

Everyone participated in equal parts of the presentation where the person that researched a topic regarding the presentation spoke about it.Therfore, this would allow each person to fully understand what they were talking about and more importantly, not read off the board.

The presentation was very simple, mostly bullet points surrounded by images to allow our presentation to be more lively and entertaining in order to engage the audience.

Self Evaluation

  • Attainment - N/A

  • My attainment is average due to my unawareness of my performance as I have not recieved any feedback from my work on the blog.

  • Effort -3

  • I would say that my effort in Media is good/average because I do Attempt all work in class at a good standard. However, my homework has been good and up to date over the term but now I have been slacking on homework due to my illness.

  • Punctuality -2

  • I have not missed a single lesson and have arrived on time to all media lessons apart from last week due to illness.

  • Submission and quality of homework - 3

  • I do generally submit homework on time but I would say for Ms Wigley,I have not posted homework for a long time on my blog. However she has discussed this issue with me and I have posted all the homework that was required on the blog.My homework generally has good quality but sometimes on less important homework I may leave it to the last minute which causes the quality of the homework to be unsatisfactory.

  • Ability to work independently - 1

  • I would say this is my strongest skill of Media as generally I mostly rely on my ideas to produce either classwork or homework

  • Quality of writing - 2

  • N/A

  • Organisation of blog - 2

  • My blog is very organised based on how I label each work that I post,in order of date and which teacher it concerns. However, lately I had posted work that should of been posted a month ago on my blog recently, which caused the order of date for the work to be unorganised.

  • Oral contributions in class - 4

  • I would say this is my weakest point simply because I generally lack confidence and rely of teachers to ask me questions in order for me to contribute to the class.

www: - My work is up to date on the blog
              - I have earned many credits over the term, including two credits in one lesson
              - I behave well in all lessons.

ebi: - Don't plagiarise any work
              - Submit all work on time even if i am ill
              - Revise the things we learn in class at home, every day.

    New Moon Trailer Analysis

What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
The techniques that this trailer uses, consists of a variety of techniques which persuades the audience to see the film. Firstly it uses quick cut shots and transitions to create a fast paced view of the adventure/action genre, engaging their target audiences to watch the film. Moreover, It also uses fade to black transitions which helps to engage the audience whilst the sequence disappears, therefore creating suspense with the use of one of the characters voiceover being heard in the back ground narration. Furthermore, the use of music also helps to create a fast-paced atmosphere and helps to gain tension and increase the tempo in trailer which has the effect of engaging the audience. Another technique which is used in regards of persuading the audience is towards the ending of the trailer, a use of a small teaser clip, gives the audience an insight into what they will be excepting from the movie as it is a sequel to the other Twilight movies so their loyal audience expects what to see from this movie. The use of silence in the end of the trailer connotes to the audience that this film is going to be very tense and is likely to lead into a bad ending as the audience are shown how their favourite character could end up dying in this movie as well as somewhat better than the first one.

How is gender represented in this trailer?

In this trailer the character, the protagonist Edward is seen to be the love of Bella’s life, who then leaves her, which creates disaster in Bella’s world. She is represented as being the typical heartbroken women who sufferers and is tormented by images of her love of her life. The males in this trailer are seen to be the ones affecting the dilemmas or solutions in this film. The fact that there are two completely different contrasts of persona of the two main male protagonists makes the trailer seem more interesting. Mostly as Jacob is seen to be the caring and loving friend and Edward is seen to be the intensely in love/heartbreaking love of Bella’s life but partially not due to his thoughts.

However the character Jacob is seen to be protective to Bella, as now that Edward has gone he attempts to seduce in a loving role towards Bella, which in result makes her stronger. The females in this trailer I seen to be the weak ones, who need a presence of a male to feel secure ,i.e. Bella and Jacobs new found relationship helps her to come out of her depression/screaming episodes.

What target audience would be attracted to this film?
The target audiences which are most likely to be attracted to this film, would be C2DE female demographic. The female target audience are attracted to the two main male protagonists who are Edward and Jacob as merchandise are mainly sold with these characters appearance on them. Women are also likely to relate to the romantic side of the film, as they could refer back to their own lives and think of their own partners and teenage girls can do this as well. The adventure side, with the involvement of werewolves etc, can appeal to males as they would like to see fight/action scenes as men are into action.

    Twentieth Century Fox

Toy Story is a 1995 American computer-animated film, the first Disney/Pixar film to be made. The top-grossing film on its opening weekend Toy Story went on to earn over $191 million in the United States and Canada during its initial theatrical release and took in more than $361 million worldwide. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive, praising both the technical innovation of the animation and the wit and sophistication of the screenplay although the film was a huge box office success, the film is currently Pixar's lowest grossing film while the film's second sequel Toy Story 3 is their highest grossing film earning over $1 billion worldwide.
    Merchandise:
Disney's Animated Storybook: Toy Story 1 2 and 3 and Disney's Activity Center: Toy Story were released. Disney’s Animated Storybook: Toy Story was the best selling software title of 1996, selling over 500,000 copies. Two console video games were released for the film: the Toy Story video game, for the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, and PC as well as Toy Story Racer, for the PlayStation (which contains elements from Toy Story 2).Pixar created original animations for all of the games, including fully animated sequences for the PC titles.
Toy Story had a large promotion prior to its release, leading to numerous tie-ins with the film including images on food packaging. A variety of merchandise was released during the film's theatrical run and its initial VHS release including toys, clothing, and shoes, among other things. When an action figure for Buzz Light-year and Sheriff Woody was created it was initially ignored by retailers. However, after over 250,000 figures were sold for each character prior to the film's release, demand continued to expand, eventually reaching over 25 million units sold by 2007.
Toy Story and its sequels have also inspired multiple attractions at the theme parks of Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

    Film Distribution

Film distribution is the process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience. Film distribution usually goes through many steps for the movie to be available to the specific audience.
Here is usually the path in the process a film company may need to go through for their movie to be available in cinemas:
    ·         Someone has an idea for a movie.
    ·         They pitch the idea to producers/directors and write the movie out.
    ·         A studio/investor purchase rights to the movie.
    ·         Find actors/mise-en-scene.
    ·         Find suitable locations and check if available for when needed.
    ·         Rehearse scenes.
    ·         Film the movie.
    ·         Edit the movie and produce final cut.
    ·         The film is sent to the studio which makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
    ·         The distribution company determines how many copies of the movie to make, buyers negotiate with distribution terms and few days before the movie release the movie is sent to the theaters.
    ·         Merchandise is sold to promote the movie.
    ·         Public release/Theaters show the movie for specified number of weeks.
    ·         The potential target audience buys a ticket to watch the movie.
    ·         After the number of weeks the movie has run the copy is sent back to the distribution and money is paid to the distribution company.

    Hollywood’s Studio System
The studio system was a means of film production and distribution dominant in Hollywood from the early 1920s through the 1950s. The term studio system refers to the practice of large motion picture studios producing movies primarily on their own filmmaking lots with creative personnel under often long-term contract and pursuing vertical integration through ownership or effective control of distributors and movie theatres, guaranteeing additional sales of films through manipulative booking techniques.

    Horizontal Integration
Horizontal Integration involves the acquisition of competitors in the same section of the industry. An example of Horizontal Integration is Sony Ericcson. Sony Ericsson is a joint venture which joined together in 2001.
    Vertical Integration
Vertical Integration is when companies control the three main areas of production, distribution and exhibition and involves one company having the ownership of every stage of the production process, thereby ensuring complete control of a media product. An example of Vertical Integration when Granada buying into Liverpool Football Club.

London to Brighton Trailer – Ms Wigley

    1.    Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to establish the film's genre?
Regarding the trailer, there is a use off various media language which establishes the hybrid, thriller/British drama that the movie acquires.Firstly, there is a use of review quotes which appears on the transitions between video image scenes of the movie and appear consistently regarding from different media print companies, which therefore indicates to the audience of the genre. Moreover, there is a use of high-tempered, fast pace music soundtrack in the background which also connotes the genre that this film is and influences the audience that this would be consistent in the film as the trailer emphasises this.
Furthermore, various camera angles also help identification to occur from the audience determining the thriller/drama genre. For example, there is a frequent use of close up shots to mainly the protagonists facial expressions allow it to convey a message to the audience to gain an understanding of what and how is this affecting her. In regards with this point, close up camera angles are typical in drama films as the audience are ‘forcefully’ drawn onto the protagonists facial expressions as well as other characters. An example of this from the trailer is while the protagonist is in the car and is being lead away by a mature male helps to connect with the audience to helps identify her fear and confusion. In addition, the transition of each sequence in the editing is cut which is purposeful in order to establish its thriller/drama genre.
Low-key lighting is also used throughout the scenes which connotes and emphasises the darkness or perhaps the bad events which will occur during this movie hence presenting the genre in a non direct way to the audience. There is also a use of enigma codes which is presented with the gun shot that appears during the sequence, connoting its thriller genre and creates a enigma code of what you may expect in the film as it is seen to be shocking  and unexpected which is one of the conventions of the thriller genre.
    2.    Media Representations: How is gender represented in the trailer?
Male characters in this trailer are shown to have dominant ideology as we as the audience are viewing the males ordering the women and making the decisions as well as acquiring stacks of money which gives them power, freedom and control. The use of props, such as the gun and high amounts of money also influences the audience in the way that the male genders are presented in oppose to how women are presented as by the use of props, we can see the representation of power to the males.
However, the female characters are represented as fragile and vulnerable people as they are shown in the trailer to be controlled by the men and being forced into certain activities that they do not wish to pursue. That being said, the protagonist who plays an 11 year old girl has an alternative representation. From the trailer this can be identified as her character has a role of prostitution, which is rather shocking as generally we never intervene child actors with roles that are too extreme.
An example of dominant and alternative ideology is in the toilet scene, where we see the women to be inferior as the low camera angles suggests the male are dominating over the female characters.
    3.       Media Institutions: In what ways is the film 'London to Brighton'  typical of a low budget British film?
Firstly, the characters including the protagonist are wearing clothing and make-up which allows the audience to view the actors in an unprofessional way. Therefore this allows the audience to view the actors as us as we would seem to have same values as them.Furthermore, the actors name are not introduced or presented in the trailer as the audience would most likely not be able to identify with the actors that are in this film, particularly because it is not a Hollywood film so that was intentionally not included as we are again, not expected to identify with the actors.
Furthermore, the quality of the video is more so unprofessional which goes in regards with the location or setting of the scenes which are mostly set in public locations such as train stations, public toilets etc...The reason for this is because I believe that the institution did not want to spend any money on preparing a studio but would go to a place with no background actors apart from the public to create a more typical low budget movie.
The accents, currency and reviews also indicate that it is a typical low budget British film. For example, where a male character reveals a £20 note, when the protagonist speaks and also the institutions that review the film such as the times etc.
    4.    Media Audiences: In what ways does the trailer promote the film to its target audience?
The trailer in many ways promotes the film to its target audiences. One way the film trailer does this is by the reviews that the film has been given. "The best British film of the century" - Big Issue.. Also as the film is a British film it attracts it's audience. The film is targeted for an adult audience between 16-34, and classes D and E.

    Camera Angle Analysis

This image is presented as a close-up which also allows the audience to take into account the surroundings aswell as the protagonist. To begin with, the fire which is aflame is necessary in this camera shot to indicate its impact on the protagonist, hence which is why it is purposeful to include the use of props,in this case a block of wood set on fire to convey a message of excitement and relieved by the protagonist as his facial expressions shows this. Moreover, the close up image also allows us to see the protagonist more clearly, such as sweat upon his face, half naked with pieces of clothes wrapped around his hand which could also symbolise that maybe he went through a lot of trouble in attempt to start a fire.In relation to this, the setting can also connote confusion and life threatening. In the background of this close up, the audience will be aware of the surrounding that the protagonist is in, which consists of various coconut trees/bushes among a beach. Therefore, this suggests that the protagonist is lost on a island with limited supply of food and raw materials which will aid his survival.Overall, the main focus of this image is between the setting, the fire and the protagonist where we are mainly drawn into his celebration of accomplishment in fire making.

The camera angle used in this frame is a long shot that allows the audience to view the setting surrounding the protagonist and the football. In addition, this camera angle allows us as the audience to see the relationship between the protagonist and the football as you could also see the protagonist looking at the ball. The island surrounding them also creates a sense of lost and confusion.

The camera angle in this frame is a medium shot, where the camera is tilted from a high angle looking down to the protagonist.Firstly, this particular medium shot allows the audience to focus upon the protagonists facial expression and the props,in this case a gun which contributes towards the tension and fierce atmosphere of this scene. Moreover, the audience are also views this frame from the villains point of view as we can see the camera looking down at the protagonist which shows him to be vulnerbale in this position.

This image is presented as an extreme close up to the lead protagonists face.To begin with, the purpose of this shot is to allow the audience to grasp his feelings and emotions at this point of the scene. However, the audience could only see partially his face as most of the image is darkness. That being said, automatically we focus upon the reflection from the protagonists glasses as this represents what he sees from his point of view as well as his emotion during this point.

This scene from Harry Potter consists of medium shots and various close ups.Firstly,we are introduced to this scene as a close up to the protagonists facial expressions then referred back to the villain and then back to the protagonist. This type of shot is also known as a reverse shot which enables the audience to take the protagonists feeling of 'shock and fear.

    Sound Extension Task 1

    1.

In 1919, the population of Hollywood was 35,000, but by 1925, had swelled to 130,000.By the late 1920s, the art of silent film had become remarkably mature. Although called silent’s, they were never really silent but accompanied by sound organs, gramophone discs, musicians, sound effects specialists, live actors who delivered dialogue, and even full-scale orchestras.
In 1925-26, America technologically revolutionized the entire industry, with the formation of the Vita phone Company (a subsidiary created by Warner Bros. and Western Electric). Warner Bros. launched sound and talking pictures, with Bell Telephone Laboratory researchers, by developing a revolutionary synchronized sound system called Vita phone. This process allowed sound to be recorded on a phonograph record that was electronically linked and synchronized with the film projector - but it was destined to be faulty due to inherent synchronization problems. Originally, Warner Bros. intended to use the system to record only music and sound effects - not dialogue. The process was first used for short one- and two-reel films, mostly comedies and vaudeville acts.
The first feature-length film with synchronized Vita phone sound effects and musical soundtrack, but without spoken dialogue, was Warner Bros.' romantic swashbuckler adventure Don Juan (1926). The prestigious production was premiered in New York on August 6, 1926, and starred John Barrymore  as the hand-kissing womanizer Director Alan Crosland's expensive film failed to create the sensation that Warners had hoped for. The second Vita phone production was The Better 'Ole (1926), featuring musical comedy and recording star Al Jolson, among others.
Most of the studios started to convert from silent to sound film production - a tremendous capital investment. Thousands of existing theatres had to be rewired for sound at great expense. In the mid 1920s, Warners invested over $3 million in outfitting its 'picture palaces' to show Vita phone films, and went into debt because of it.
In 1926, William Fox of the Fox Film Corporation responded to Warner’s success with its own similar and competing advanced Movie tone system - the first commercially successful sound-on-film process developed in conjunction with General Electric. It added a 'soundtrack' directly onto the strip of film and would eventually become the predominant sound technology.

Still Image and Video Extract of a Film Noir - Analysis

    Part A)

This image is from the film noir movie: The gun for hire.In this image, there is a use of low-key lighting  which casts a shadow upon the woman, who may be seen as the femme fatale. However, there has been a use of filler lights directing from the right of the frame, allowing the audience to visualize the protagonist clearly. In regards with the femme fatal,a shadow is casted upon her face due to the protagonist blocking the filler lights, hence allowing a shadow to cover half her face. Therefore, this could connote that she has a double role in this film such as the protagonist may believe that she is on his side however we come to find out that she is an evil character in the film.

In addition, there is also a use of props such as the gun he is holding which could connote violence.Having said that, the protagonist and the femme fatal have similar facial expressions aswell as looking in the same direction which shows that they are about to kill someone. The low-key lighting also helps to create a chiaroscuro effect as the shadows enhances the dramatic effect particularly for the femme fatale. Finally, the filler lights are also used to enhance both characters personality in the film, allowing the audience to assume that the protagonist will be led eventually to a disaster by the femme fatale.

    Part B)

This scene is introduced by the femme fatale entering the door at an office whilst wielding a gun, causing the characters in the office to be afraid of her and cast an evil side for the woman, allowing the audience to see that she will cause trouble later in the film.To begin with, there is a use of high-key lighting to expose the femme fatale's bad side therefore allowing the audience to again see clearly what is occuring in the frame. In addition, top lighting is used as the key light mainly foccused upon the femme fatale hence the use of the gun allows the audience to question what is the femme fatale after.

Moreover, the femme fatale escapes with the protagonist and then shoots/kills a innocent character for no reason at all, exposing what a truly evil character she is.Although most film noir movies use a low-key lighting, this scene has a consistent use of high-key lighting as it would be more effective directly showing the setting to the audience. Finally, the use of the gun is continuously shown throughout this scene, connoting danger to everyone as she always keeps the gun by her side.Maybe later on in the film, she may kill the protagonist because of greed and evilness.

Film Noir Description - Research Homework Part A

Film noir is a media term mainly to describe Hollywood crime dramas, which was popular particularly in 1940s to 1950s.Furthermore,the lighting of these typical film noir movies would consist of a low-key, black and white cinematogrophy.

The films usually have dark themes and characterizations. Noir scenes are made from interesting camera angles and with dramatic close-ups and shadowed lighting. Frequently the stories use of smoke-filled rooms, views of light filtered through venetian blinds, seedy downtown areas with neon lights, dark wet streets to heighten the noir effect.

The content of noir films keeps pace with the settings. Most noir stories feature main characters who find themselves embroiled in hopeless situations, fighting against a force that threatens to overtake them, the force being their inablility to resist temptation. Most often this main character is male, although there are some noir movies in which the main character is female.

In any case, the protagonist always has a major character flaw which leads to ruin. It might be that the character is a small-time criminal, adulterer, thief, of a weak-will, etc.

The femme fatale is often distrustful and even contemptuous of the protagonist but still holds him within her grasp by using promises of their new life together after the deed is complete. The femme fatale is not always the only woman in the life of the main character. There is often a balance of the evil femme fatale with another pure and virtuous woman who only wishes the best for the protagonist. In this battle, it is the evil that always triumphs in noir. The protagonist is powerless to make the choice of the woman who is best for him.

The plot of a noir movie is circuitous and holds many surprises and unanswered questions for the viewer. Sometimes the resolution of the plot is left hanging, casting an even darker aura over the film.

Mise-en-Scene Hwk 2 / Comparison Analysis of Three Video Extracts

    1) A scene from ' The Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock (Drama 1960s Genre)

In this scene, there is a use of mise-en-scene to send a message to the audience in a non verbal way.Firstly,a daughter who seemed unaware of the incident that happened ,approached the house in search of her father. Moreover, the setting also indicated something bad has happened. For example, shelves were off balance, curtains torn, window glass broken, bed covers were all over the place and also the room looked generally unpleasant. Therefore, this could connote that there was violence or a murder that had occured in that room.Furthermore, the camera then panned to the protagonist to glance at her facial expressions. The camera then panned to the left to the character who was dead on the floor, his clothes were torn apart and blood drew upon his clothes, all over his body. This could connote in relation to the setting that a murder has taken place in that room.Additionally, make up was also used to show the eyes removed from victim of the murder. This could connote that the murder was truly gruesome. Finally, the lighting is generally dark and seems compressed in the house, allowing it to show a more uncomfortable environment.

    2) A Scene From 'Star Wars' (Sci-Fi)

In this scene, costume and lighting are the most effective factors of mise-en-scene.Firstly,Darth Vader who is the villain is wearing a costume that connotes evilness, such as the black masked helmet and the black cape. The colour black usually connotes 'evil' and that costume is the trademark for darth vader and the star wars trilogy so it would be shown recognition throughout the years. In comparison with the first video, the lighting remains dark too especially towards the sub-villain, where partially his face is visible. Therefore the lighting could connote him to be a horrific character. However, the protagonists costume is a plain black, science fictioned type uniform. This could connote in this seen, how the villain is superior to him, and allowing the audience to think that the hero would not win the battle to build up suspense.

    3) A Scene From The Terminal (Comedy Drama)

In this scene, the most effective use of mise-en-scene was the props. In difference with the other two videos,we are introduced to the scene with the protagonist (Tom Hanks) holding an electronic razor in the middle of the airport whilst also fiddling around with a tie in his left hand.He was also surrounded by a barrier which can therefore connote his confusion and his misplacement.Furthermore, the scene then cuts into the protagonist in the security office, but this time, holding a paper to direct him to communicate with the other character. From his facial expressions, you can notice his confusion and hesistance he has when talking to another person which could connote that he is a foreign character. In relation to this, the protagonists costume also symbolises this as he is wearing a low valued ,brown suit with a travel bag on his shoulder. This connotes that he does not fit in with the society he is currently in,therefore implying his confusion.

    Mise-en-Scene Hwk

The central protagonist is identified to the audience as Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford as he is holding a lit up torch, which connotes leadership and maturity which relates back to him as the lead protagonist. Indiana Jones is wearing his trademark stereotypical cowboy hat. Moreover, Jones is wearing a beige suede jacket and matching beige trousers which seen to connote adventure and Indiana Jones has been a classical movie where his costume never changes. Therefore, this could be reminiscent to the audience. Also, the teenage character besides him is wearing a black leather vintage jacket stylish in the 1980s and blue jeans, this could connote to the audience that stereotypically, he is a rebel, as well as his greased, low cut hair, which is associated with typical teenage boys.
Within the image, there is use of key lighting, which is used to employ focus on the two characters in the frame. Furthermore, in order to inform the audience in a non direct way that the setting is in a cave, the lighting shows this by dark spots in the image, surrounded by boulders.
From the makeup, you can observe their faces and hands which seem to be dirty, as they are on an adventure and are looking at an object or area in the floor which has some significance and could be an enigma code as the audience intends to discover what they are looking at.
Both of the protagonists appear to be holding torches, as the image clearly signifies the characters holding torches and are pointing towards the floor as if they have discovered something, this could also be an action code.Furthermore, they are crouching on the rocky surface which brings interest to the audience that the protagonists have found something very precious or valuable. Most importantly, the props used could be Indiana Jones' hat, as it is stereotypical in all of the Indiana Jones films and in the narrative and could be associated with the genre of adventure.

    Generally, in this image, the
protagonists appear to be in an enclosed cave setting, as the image clearly signifies the characters in a dim light, some pitch dark patches the setting could relate to the genre of adventure, as it is about discovery and could lead to the pursuit of an object of substantial importance and value.

To a certain extent, by looking at the image, the film could be aimed at a C2DE
psychographic or socio economic group, as they enjoy the adventure genre and could be aimed at people who generally aspire to life and want to explore things(explorers part of psychographic, I think) and also the strugglers.
